About MishMath

My journey didn't begin in the world of tutoring; it started amidst the complex codes and algorithms of Computer Science. With a Bachelor's degree under my belt, I dove straight into a Master's program, eyes set on the dream of becoming a software developer in the bustling tech hub of Silicon Valley. That dream, however, was about to take a surprising twist.

The Accidental Discovery

It was during my Master's that I stumbled upon tutoring, almost by chance. Initially, it was a means to an end – a side job to support my studies. But, as I delved deeper into this role, something magical happened. I discovered a love for tutoring that I never knew existed. The joy of sharing knowledge, the thrill of seeing my students' eyes light up with understanding, transformed what was once a side job into a calling. My aspirations shifted, and the vision of a 9-5 software developer role gave way to a more fulfilling dream – becoming your tutor and mentor.

Six Years and Counting

Fast forward six years, and here I am, more in love with tutoring than ever. Every day is a new adventure, a chance to make a difference in someone's life. My journey from a budding software developer to a full-time tutor has been nothing short of incredible.

Why Tutoring?

People often ask me, "Why choose tutoring over a potentially more lucrative career in computer engineering?" The answer lies in the joy it brings me. There's an indescribable feeling of fulfillment in witnessing the 'aha' moment in a student's eyes, celebrating together when they conquer a challenging concept or score higher on a test. These moments, these connections that span hundreds of miles, are irreplaceable and something I believe a conventional engineering job could never offer.

Gratitude and Connection

Every day, I am grateful. Grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your learning journey, to be the one you trust to guide you through the daunting world of tests and challenges. In each of you, I see a unique story, a potential waiting to be unlocked, and it's my privilege to be a part of that process.

So, here's to the journey we'll embark on together – filled with learning, growth, and those priceless 'aha' moments. Welcome to a space where your challenges become ours to tackle, where your victories are celebrated, and where learning becomes not just a task, but a journey we enjoy together. Welcome to a place where tutoring goes beyond education – it's about connection, understanding, and shared triumphs.

Let's make this journey unforgettable!

Frequently Asked Questions

What specific areas of the ACT/PSAT/SAT/GRE do you specialize in?

I specialize in all areas of the ACT, PSAT, SAT, and GRE. I can help you prepare for any section of these tests, depending on your needs and goals.

Here are some examples of what I can do for each test:

ACT: The ACT has four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. It also has an optional Writing section. I can help you improve your grammar, vocabulary, and rhetorical skills for the English section; your problem-solving, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry skills for the Math section; your comprehension, analysis, and inference skills for the Reading section; and your scientific reasoning, data interpretation, and experimental design skills for the Science section. I can also help you write a persuasive and coherent essay for the Writing section, if you choose to take it.

PSAT: The PSAT is similar to the SAT, but it has fewer questions and a shorter time limit. It has two main sections: Reading & Writing and Math. I can help you master the skills and content tested in both sections, such as reading comprehension, grammar, usage, algebra, geometry, data analysis, and trigonometry. I can also help you qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which is based on your PSAT score.

SAT: The SAT has two main sections: Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math. It also has an optional Essay section. I can help you develop your critical reading, writing, and language skills for the Evidence-Based Reading & Writing section; your problem-solving, algebra, geometry, data analysis, and advanced math skills for the Math section; and your argumentative, analytical, and writing skills for the Essay section, if you choose to take it.

GRE: The GRE has three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. I can help you enhance your verbal skills, such as vocabulary, comprehension, and reasoning for the Verbal Reasoning section; your mathematical skills, such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis for the Quantitative Reasoning section; and your writing skills, such as clarity, organization, and evidence for the Analytical Writing section.

How do you personalize your tutoring to fit different learning styles?

I personalize my tutoring to fit different learning styles by using a variety of methods and strategies.

Some of the ways I do this are:

Assessing the student’s strengths and weaknesses: Before I start tutoring, I ask the student to take a diagnostic test or a practice test to identify their areas of improvement and their areas of confidence. I also ask them about their goals, preferences, and interests. This helps me tailor my tutoring plan to suit their needs and abilities.

Adapting the pace and difficulty: I adjust the pace and difficulty of my tutoring sessions according to the student’s progress and feedback. I make sure to challenge the student without overwhelming them. I also provide frequent reviews and quizzes to reinforce the concepts and skills they have learned.

Using different modes of instruction: I use different modes of instruction to cater to different learning styles, such as visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and reading/writing. I use examples, diagrams, charts, videos, podcasts, games, and simulations to make the tutoring sessions more engaging and interactive. I also use verbal explanations, questions, discussions, and feedback to enhance the student’s understanding and communication skills.

Encouraging active learning: I encourage the student to be an active participant in the tutoring sessions, rather than a passive recipient. I ask them to explain their reasoning, justify their answers, and apply their knowledge to new situations. I also encourage them to ask questions, share their opinions, and express their doubts. I foster a supportive and collaborative learning environment where the student feels comfortable and confident.

What are your qualifications and experience in tutoring for these exams?

Great question!

I have worked with hundreds of students and have helped them achieve their goals. Don't take my word for it, read the reviews section above :)

How do you keep up with the latest changes to the ACT/SAT/PSAT formats and content?

Some of the sources I use are to keep up with the changes are:

Official websites: I regularly visit the official websites of the ACT, SAT, and PSAT to check for any announcements, updates, or changes to the tests. I also download and review the latest test specifications, sample questions, and practice tests from these websites.

Test preparation books: I use test preparation books that are published by reputable and authorized publishers, such as The College Board, Kaplan, Princeton Review, and Barron’s. I make sure to use the most recent editions of these books, which reflect the current format and content of the tests. I also compare and contrast the different books to get a comprehensive and balanced view of the tests.

Online courses and resources: I enroll in online courses and use online resources that are designed and delivered by experts and instructors who have extensive knowledge and experience with the tests. I look for courses and resources that are updated frequently and offer feedback and guidance.

Professional development and networking: I participate in professional development and networking opportunities that are related to the tests, such as workshops, webinars, conferences, and forums. I learn from the best practices and insights of other tutors and educators who are familiar with the tests. I also share my own experiences and challenges with them and seek their advice and support.

What materials and resources do you use during tutoring sessions?

I have a wealth of materials and resources that I have accumulated over my time. All the books and resources that I use are provided by me.

I recommend the Official Guides by the makers of the test. Those are the most useful for test prep. I have the PDF versions of my recommended test prep books out there. You don’t need to buy the physical version of the book!

I also use free online resources like KhanAcademy, discord, online tests and online forums specific to the test you’re doing

How do you track and assess a student's progress over time?

I track and assess a student’s progress over time by using various methods and tools. Some of the methods and tools I use are:

Baseline and benchmark tests: I administer baseline and benchmark tests at the beginning, middle, and end of the tutoring program to measure the student’s initial, intermediate, and final performance. I compare the student’s scores and improvement on these tests to their goals and expectations. I also use these tests to identify the student’s strengths and weaknesses and adjust my tutoring plan accordingly.

Formative and summative assessments: I use formative and summative assessments throughout the tutoring sessions to monitor the student’s learning and mastery of the skills and content. Formative assessments are informal and ongoing, such as quizzes, questions, discussions, and feedback. Summative assessments are formal and periodic, such as tests, projects, and essays. I use both types of assessments to evaluate the student’s understanding, application, and retention of the material.

Progress reports and portfolios: I provide progress reports and portfolios to the student and their parents or guardians on a regular basis. Progress reports are written summaries of the student’s achievements, challenges, and feedback. Portfolios are collections of the student’s work, such as assignments, tests, essays, and projects. I use progress reports and portfolios to showcase the student’s growth and development over time and to celebrate their accomplishments.

What is your approach to helping students manage test anxiety and build confidence?

My approach to helping students manage test anxiety and build confidence is based on three principles: preparation, relaxation, and positive thinking.

Here is how I apply these principles in my tutoring:

Preparation: I help students prepare for the tests by teaching them the skills and content they need to know, providing them with practice tests and feedback, and helping them develop effective test-taking strategies. I also help them plan their study schedule, set realistic goals, and review their progress. I believe that preparation is the key to reducing anxiety and increasing confidence.

Relaxation: I help students relax before and during the tests by teaching them various relaxation techniques, such as breathing exercises, meditation, visualization, and progressive muscle relaxation. I also help them cope with stress, emotions, and distractions that may interfere with their performance. I encourage them to take breaks, stretch, drink water, and eat healthy snacks. I believe that relaxation is the key to enhancing focus and concentration.

Positive thinking: I help students think positively about themselves and the tests by providing them with positive affirmations, motivational quotes, and success stories. I also help them challenge and replace negative thoughts, such as self-doubt, fear, and pessimism, with positive thoughts, such as confidence, courage, and optimism. I believe that positive thinking is the key to boosting self-esteem and motivation.

How flexible is your scheduling, and how do you handle cancellations or rescheduling?

I am remote and ready to work when you are. I give unfettered access to many hours throughout the day to make sure I here for whenever you may need me.

When you schedule, you can cancel or reschedule using the link that is in email upon scheduling

Can you guarantee that I will get better and get results?

Every single one of my students have benefitted from my help. In one way or another. However, some do better. Although, I can't guarantee exactly how much I can help you.. I do guarantee that you will be better after we meet than before. That's my personal guarantee!
